The 1,000 Tree Planting Festival - July 2013

The first such initiative was kicked off on the 21st of July at the Bidhan Sishu Udyan, Kolkata by Sustainable Green Initiative and 2nd Innings Foundation on behalf of Lions Clubs International District 322B1, Kolkata.

The festival was inaugurated by Lions Clubs International - International 2nd Vice President, Dr. Jitsuhiro Yamada, in the presence of the Lions from around Kolkata.

Among the Lions Clubs members were Lion Rama Bhatia, District Governor, Lions Clubs
International, District 322B1, Kolkata; Lion Sangita Jatia, International Director; Lion A P Singh Past International Director; Lion S Lovisuth, Lion Pushpa Agarwal, Lion B L Banka and Lion Suraj Bagla.

As the day wore on, a steady trickle of guests saw a number of Kolkatans of all ages planting saplings of their favorite fruit trees.

Despite the occasional rain, the children had free reign to get their clothes wet and muddy as the parents believed it was for a great cause.

Ace Shooter, Joydeep Karmakar, Kolkata based musicians Rahul Guha Roy, Sukanti Roy and Anushree Gupta and Model/Actress Dona Saha were among those that joined in to lend a green hand
to the future of Kolkata.

These trees were planted around the Bidhan Sishu Udyan, a park/center for children of the neighboring communities to utilize.

Being a transport hub with a railway station and bus terminus, Ultadanga is easily one of the most highly polluted areas in Kolkata. Keeping this in mind, 600 Neem Saplings were planted. Neem being a variety of trees that are favored for their optimum carbon sequestering properties.

Also planted around the park were 400 Mango, Guava and a variety of indigenous tree types that are ideal for Kolkata's climate.

Sustainable Green Initiative plants fruit trees on fallow/ community lands and on lands owned by marginal and Bpl farmers. We work with self help groups and NGOs who help us identify right beneficiaries who can continue the process of planting and nurturing trees. (See our methodology).

At Sustainable Green Initiative, we plant trees to help the fight against climate change and also hunger, poverty and rural migration. By planting a tree through us, you help in doing your bit to mitigate your carbon footprint and carry on the fight against hunger, poverty and climate change.
